What a day in Dundee
Biggest ever Dundee Kiltwalk turns Tayside tartan
4,900 heroes took to the streets and pathways from St Andrews to Dundee today (Sunday Aug 16) to raise vital funds for 570 Scottish charities. And the Dundee Kiltwalk is on course to raise even more than last year’s incredible figure of £815,000.
3,200 people, many of them tartan clad, set-off from West Sands St Andrews at 9am on a 20 mile Mighty Stride to Dundee.
Another 1,700 Kiltwalkers took on the 4 mile Wee Wander from Castle Green Broughty Ferry to the Finish Line at Slessor Garden in the heart of the city.
Major local charities like NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation and Kanzen for Life each had nearly 300 walkers. Many of the fundraisers proudly wore the colours of their chosen charity.
Kiltwalk CEO Paul Cooney said: "What another massive Kiltwalk day for so many charities here in North Fife, Dundee and Angus. Thank you to every one of our walkers for caring enough to train, fundraise and take millions of steps to help our charities who really need our support like never before.
"Every step you take today is helping to change lives. Thanks to the support of The Hunter Foundation (THF), every pound, every penny raised, plus Gift Aid, goes directly to the 570 charities chosen by our walkers, ensuring their hard-earned cash goes to where it’s needed most.”
Since Sir Tom Hunter stepped in to save Kiltwalk 11 years ago, THF and 250,000 walkers have raised an incredible £65 million for 4,518 charities across Scotland.
Earlier in the year, Sir Tom shared his ambition for Kiltwalk to reach £100 million in the next five years to “be there” for Scotland’s third sector in these times of global and economic uncertainty.
The Hunter Foundation underwrites Kiltwalk, ensuring that every penny the walkers raise goes to the charities of their choice, plus gift aid. It’s the lowest-cost platform for raising charity funds in Scotland and the 5th biggest mass fundraising event in the UK.
Mighty Striders set off early from the iconic surrounding of West Sands, making their way through Tentsmuir Forest, up the coast to Tayport and across the Tay Road Bridge before ending at Slessor Garden in the centre of the City of Discovery.
5 pit stops offered a variety of delicious snacks from Kiltwalk’s Official Supermarket partner, Lidl. Entertainment was provided by local performers, dance groups, charities and corporate sponsors.
Headline sponsor, Arnold Clark, provided the biggest surprise of the morning at the Start when a deserving Kiltwalker discovered her charity was receiving a massive £10,000 windfall.
Alice Burge was delighted to win the cash prize for Dundee charity Help for Kids. Their sole aim is to support local children from birth to 18 years old who have been disadvantaged by financial, social, illness or disability.
And one of the many Arnold Clark employees taking part is also going to be selected as a surprise winner for their charity. In total, an extra £20,000 bonus for local charities.
Russell Borrie, Chief Executive Officer at Arnold Clark, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be marking our eleventh year as headline sponsor of the Kiltwalk.
"The Dundee Kiltwalk is always a brilliant occasion, with people from across the city and surrounding areas coming together to back the charities and causes closest to their hearts.
"This year brings an added level of excitement, with two lucky walkers each in with a chance of winning an extra £10,000 for their charities. Good luck to everyone taking part!"
Once again Kiltwalk is supporting Sir Chris Hoy’s Tour de 4 campaign established following his diagnosis with stage 4 prostate cancer. 260 people chose to walk in Dundee for our greatest Olympian’s five chosen cancer charities.
Next up is the final Kiltwalk of 2026, the Edinburgh Kiltwalk on Sunday 13 September. It’s still just £20 to walk thanks to the support of The Hunter Foundation and Arnold Clark.
